Goad to hear that is now sorted.
However for sake of clarity and completeness, you obviously have a remote control key fob, in which batteries are replaceable.
The other item i referred to earlier, is an optional extra known as a “Key Tag” which has no buttons, but will perform the same functions automatically as the key fob as long as you have it with you. It is even slimmer than the key fob and it is that one in which batteries cannot be replaced.

The key tag fob did not do anything earlier in the day. I was told by Volvo assist on the phone to use that key initially. I was to use the physical key to open the car (via passenger door). The alarm would go off but put it on the logo in the centre cubbyhole/central armrest and it would reset things . Key would not work the lock which they said might be due to having never been used.

This is why they sent a Volvo/BMW mechanic/technician . He said he had never seen this key before which seems ludicrous!! I know my friend with a similar age V90 has one for his vehicle. In actual fact, the key that did work was the one in the normal fobs.
The speed of service was really good, compared to our previous breakdown.
I do.service the car with a main dealer because they cover you with Volvo assist when abroad. The extra main dealer cost is well offset in not getting green flag or AA overseas breakdown costs.

The key tag battery only lasts about two years. The tag was intended to be used when you needed a waterproof key. The battery can be changed if you carefully split the moulding with a sharp knife. I've never bothered.

IGrumpy, I was told that it was a ‘wet key’ once and then a service key . BUT if it is a key to use why could we not get it to open the door ? It is cut differently from the fob keys which opened the door .

The key tag didn't have a key as such. It was a bit like a usb stick with no buttons or key. It acted as a remote key only, ie as long as you had it in you pocket you could unlock the car just by putting your hand on the door handle. The 'proper' keys have buttons and a hard key.

Don’t want to labour this thread but the fob was put away for emergencies in a car file, retrieved yesterday for the first time land it has a key, similar to the fob one. But as the tag doesn’t work I will attempt a battery change as it is double your 2 year suggested shelf life.
I will ask when it gets a service in the next couple of months but thanks again to everyone. MM

Yes you have scrapped the Interweb to find out everything about me and know I am now >60 years old so start to market your Trump branded incontinence pants at me. Do you think I want to be 60 and want to appreciate the outstanding offer you are allegedly making to me. Do you not think it might offend me?

I tried to unpack some 2032 recently and by the end was near to throwing them and the product out the window. We need a new type of packing marked "I am a grown up and do not intend to insert or swallow this damn thing, just let me in".
