I feel I should qualify that my choice was on the grounds of actually driving on my usual roads. Even as garage art, I can relate to the Jag far more easily than I could the 917 which looks very much at home parked in that location and slightly more so on the race track, whereas I suspect the jag could look reasonably at home in the location of the last pic I posted of my old Mog a day or so ago..?

But then again perhaps an additional dose of nostalgia plays a part, I do remember being on track along with a D type, and an XKSS for company, whereas I have not had that privilege with a 917 wich I imagine would be scary indeed... (-:

1931 ... 500cc supercharged 4 cylinder Guzzi ... there were some stunningly innovative examples of engineering in the pre-war years .... bet you got oily riding it though! 🙂

I had a Nourish 4-valve per cylinder head to fit to a 650 T120 motor. Eventually sold off before I built it all up.

Seeing that 3 cylinder W engine remineded me of a Guzzi prototype

Moto Guzzi W103


Between 1981 and 1982 Lino Tonti developed, on the basis of the twin-cylinder, a three-cylinder with a W layout with a 65° angle between the cylinders and a total displacement of 992 cc, rod and rocker arm distribution with two camshafts in the crankcase to the side of the central cylinder, fueled by three 30 mm Dell'Orto carburetors.
The engine, although remaining a masterpiece of engineering, was never mounted on any prototype and was probably set aside due to the bulk of the vertical cylinder which would have forced the design of a new frame.

Whilst I have no way of knowing it is possible that the design was conceived as an aero engine. Around that time Guzzi was supplying a hemi head version of the small block V twin as an engine for drones.

PS. Whilst I found this line drawing on the net next to a photo of the Guzzi prototype it is clearly a drawing of an entirely different engine. The words in English, rather than Italian, do seem to confirm this.

Moto Guzzi V4



The Moto Guzzi V4 was a prototype made by Lino Tonti.
The engine has the classic 90° V configuration but unlike twin-cylinders it has an overhead camshaft distribution controlled by a belt. The package, including the gearbox, does seem to be quite lengthy.



The V4 configuration was then taken up again for a study for the V7 and never put into production. A version of the engine does seem to have been mounted in a modified V twin frame but whether or not it was ever tried on the road I can not say. The photo below seems to show the engine mounted without a gearbox though it does have a starter motor fitted.
