DOT 3 will do, DOT 4 is maybe a bit better, the fluid doesn't lead a particularly hard life unless you drive it with the handbrake on. DOT5.1 is also fine.

Don't use DOT 5, the silicone fluid, it's not compatible with what is in there an might be incompatible with some of the seals in the system.

About to change the brake and clutch fluid on my M3W.

DOT 4 is recommended. Most available seem to be Synthetic is this the correct type or do I need to seek out a Glycol based fluid?

Any fluid made to DOT4 spec will be compatible with the machine. So called synthetic brake fluids are glycol based (i.e. PEG-polyethylene glycol), but have performance enhancing additives to increase boiling point, reduce the impact of water absorption, reduce corrosion, etc.
