We stayed at the Sandymount, which was about 300 metres from Aviva and 400 metres from the Dart - bargain at just over £120 a night (with a massive car park). Just checked O'Callaghans and they're a little out of our price range!

That's excellent value for Dublin and a great location. If you haven't been yet do Trinity College (TCD) and the Book of Kells. By way of interest and history surrounding TCD and the banning of Roman Catholics from Trinity College Dublin under the Lenten Regulations issued in Dublin by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin John Charles McQuaid on February 7 1944 .The terms of the ban were explicit and uncompromising: Any Catholic who disobeys this law is guilty of mortal sin and while he [sic, but presumably also she] persists in disobedience is unworthy to receive the Sacraments.

In 1968 TCD was in the midst of the merger negotiations with UCD, the proposed solution to the ban by the then Minister of Education, Donogh O’Malley, for at that time it was deemed impossible to confront the power of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland directly.
The ban made a nonsense of TCD’s famous history as the great university of All-Ireland from 1592-1921, for although founded by a Protestant Queen of England, Ireland and Wales, Elizabeth I, sectarianism did not exist in the College by, for example the Easter Rising of 1916, as one glance at the TCD War Dead of 1914-1918 (457 dead as recorded in the Hall of Honour in Front or Parliament Square, 1928) will immediately testify (as also the TCD War Dead of 1939-1945).

Fortunately Archbishop McQuaid’s ban was lifted on September 7 1970 after the Irish Hierarchy had applied to Rome on 25 June 1970 for permission to lift the ban on the attendance of Roman Catholics at Trinity.

On 18 October 1973 the Protestant Archbishop of Dublin Alan Buchanan, who himself had parachuted into Arnhem as a chaplain in 1944. made a formal enabling declaration opening College Chapel for regular use by all the main denominations.

Yeah, done most of Historic Dublin - I used to teach an A Level Course on the relationship between Britain and Ireland 1798 to 1921, hence the numerous yearly school trips!

So you know all the good pubs then!

Regarding Ireland: Took the Morgan to Dublin this year and then down to Cork and then the Ring of Beara.
We stayed in Trinity College, handy for our first visit which was the Book of Kells. You start by visiting the university library, which currently has no books, as they’re removed conservation. So there a a lot of audio-visual displays instead. Then off to the see the actual book. There’s only one book, so the rest of this building is audio-visuals. Then into the building entitled The Book of Kells Experience. This is an exhibition almost exclusively populated by audio- visuals.
We then went to the Museum of Emigration. Unfortunately, when people emigrated, they took their possessions with them, so the exhibition has no artifacts, but instead has 16 rooms, each with an audio-visual display.
Then we went to the GPO building, where there was a display including a sandbagged position and rifle as used in the rising. This was followed by a 15 minute audio-visual presentation on the rising.
Next stop was the Guinness brewery. Unfortunately there’s not much to see in a brewery but pipes and vats. So we were treated to 5 floors of audio-visual displays, of which one was a 5 minute audio-visual display on barrel making.
Part of our ticket provided for a free pint. There are only bars on the 6th floor, but when we asked for our pint, the barman said “oh no sir don’t drink in here , you need to go to the 7th floor, that’s a better place to have your pint”!!
I needed my pint after that lot.
Ps. If you go, try to get a table at the Trocadero. Recommended.

You hide your disappointment well, wow things have changed since I last did the tour of Dublin about 20 odd years ago .I'd be pissed off with just audio visuals, one of the attractions of the book of Kells was they turned a page a day, so something different each time you went in.......A library empty of books, that must have rocked your boat so to speak.....bare shelfs.


I'll not recommend them to anyone else.....a bit late for my next door neighbour she was over there last weekend for a concert, in Dublin for the first time....I hope the Guinness and the pub 'craic ' was decent to compensate and blur her recollection of the rest.

Well at least the Guinness was real

SFG if you go to the Trocadero for a meal will it be an audio/visualisation of a dinner?
