There is a long term owner of several classic MTW's who has a little project converting one of these to an EV, he admits it will be a bit basic on tech and target range of only 30 miles as it's just for a quick spin to the shops.

Not seen him for a while, will be interesting to see the final result

In Italy there are a couple of people who are converting classic Ape 3 wheelers for city use. Many cities no longer allow 2 stroke engines and these are very useful for deliveries in narrow city lanes.
The autonomy is only 50 to 80km (in line with the 30 miles mentioned above)

There is a company in Villigen that converts classic cars into EVs. They specialize in fitting old Porsches with electric motors.

Yet, Porsche itself its apparently backing continued use of the ICE. Be interesting to see what happens in the UK come 2030, if ICE are still banned. Will Porsche i=only sell EV's into a very important UK market.

But they are only a tenth of their parent VW, who is the 3rd biggest EV manufacturer in the world behind BYD and Tesla. With China electrifying at the rate it is, and Europe rapidly following, one would hope they have a good long-term strategy. It might be that VW are happy to let them continue to flog ICE stuff while they can in the short term.

Is electric the way forward or just a current fad.

But what about the massive naturally occurring hydrogen deposits that are being found around the world from within French coal mines (which may also apply to UK mines) to the massive deposits found in the US, which may start to change the emphasis on powering motion and generating heat in the coming years.

I was really pleased to read that the University of Cambridge has developed a form of photosynthesis that filters carbon from the air and converts, it into a green fuel which when burnt produces no carbon emissions. It now needs greater funding to scale up and industrialise the process. Could be a game changer, stripping carbon from the air to fuel motion.

Trouble is we have already found that removing smog and cleaningr up the air especially over seas accelerates climate change, oh what a pickle we are in.

Electric cars are not the only way forward, nor have they ever been touted as such. For a set of use cases however they are remarkably well suited. There will always be some people who are prepared to pay a premium for something different, but you need to go a long way to beat the simplicity, longevity and running costs of an EV now that the battery life concerns have been shown to be ill-founded.

Hydrogen is especially appealing for HGV, rail, heavy plant operations and the like, and for those who really can’t move away from ICE there will be synthetic fuels available.

I have found my perfect short range sub 10 miles transportation. My Pedelec makes local transport quick, easy, costs a negligible amount to run, and keeps me fit and healthy too. The carrying capacity of 20kg is fine for most shopping trips, I can be down to Waitrose and back in less than half an hour.

The future of transport is not going to be about a single one size fits all solution, but then it never really has been.
