Not having any children about the house for circa 30 years, I guess my personal priorities may differ somewhat and I was greatly frustrated to think perhaps I was suffering some degree of incapability relative to basic electrical understanding..... Though seems I managed to work my way through it.
I expect that the coating must be conductive to some extent but it seems not enough for some devices that may not generate enough spring pressure or may not have teeth to cut into the coating as the battery is slid into place, such as in my garage door remotes....
I wonder how many batteries and or devices might be binned, if this issue is as common as I imagine it might be..?
It seems we may live in a world of ever increasing unintended consequences.. ?
Additionally, I wonder if the foul tasting coating might alter it`s electrical resistance with the passage of time while the battery is within it`s packaging... ?
In Australia new CR3032 batteries and similar come in a blister pack that is virtually impossible to get off without cutting with scissors. The idea is it will protect the stomach if the battery gets in there. The two issues are firstly choking and secondly battery burns in places it gets stuck.
It is a real pain changing batteries but if it saves a kid then it is worth it.
We have just bought a 2020 mini. Do the owners of Minis know how to turn off the traffic warning system? I can happily do all sorts of things on PC, phones, boat chartplotters etc but can I hell as like make any sense of the infotainment system in the Mini. Or the owners manual. Or BMW's ****! on line system.
No similar difficulty with the family Merc. Could it be that the Mini computer system is the one bit designed here in the UK?
Anyway I want rid of the automayit system that tells me about traffic jams in Merthyr Tydfil or Bathnorton when I am 40 miles away and just doing some local shopping.
I have a 2019 Mini so hopefully the same layout. It’s a physical button immediately below the circular central screen on the left hand side next to a button labelled mode. It’s got a diagram that looks like two cars and a radio transmitter. It’s easy to press by mistake and drove me mad when the traffic notifications came on seemingly by themselves. After searching through the infotainment menus and sub menus with no luck I pressed the button wondering what it did and the notifications stopped. Press again and they come back on. I must have pressed it by mistake when I was cleaning the inside of the car. Hope this helps.

Thanks Grumpy Pa and Luddite you have cured three months of intense frustration re the batteries in my key fob, they are sold here in a tight blister pack which requires strong scissors to open -but I never considered the coating -gave both batteries a bit of a coarse sanding and hey presto for the first time in six months it works as it should -and hopefully I wont get the silly messages as i am driving down the motorway that the key has been removed from the car! (Volvo XC60)

Glad someone somewhere found benefit in my determined struggles to resolve a situation that had me thinking that advancing years had finally clamed yet another victim to some form of insanity....
I know where you are coming from on the insanity front. I have just returned from a very short shopping trip (to collect such niceties as supermarket versions of LemSip) and tried to open the house front door with the Land Rover's keys
