I thought that I would mention that our modem/router/WiFi is an AVM FRITZ!Box 7590, now superseded by a later model, the FRITZ!Box 7590 AX. It is also, amongst other things, a DECT base station and we have a number of portable handsets and mobile phones registered. We also have a Fritz WiFi extender which seamlessly gives us WiFi in parts of the house where the signal was previously fairly weak. As part of the functions there is not only Voicemail but also a register of incoming and outgoing calls and a blacklist system. It is possible to transfer calls from one handheld to another, or, for that matter, to the wired handset. Highly recommended. Their UK site is https://en.fritz.com/products/fritzbox/

Usually the email headers clearly show that the sender is not the bank. Scammers are getting more cunning at substituting characters to make them look like the legit addresses. Part of the filtering you suggest could be to test if known substitutions have been used to mimic a genuine address. It would also make sense for email addresses to be displayed in fonts that, for example, don't make I look like l.

If I get an e-mail purporting to be from the bank Paypal etc I simply go to their official website to check, the same with these unbelievable offers on well know brands.

Heinz no matter how worldly wise we may think ourselves to be.... I fear advancing years makes some of us us ever more vulnerable to rapidly changing technology, and as such we seem to be an ideal target for scammers... In your defence, I think every age lets their guard down from time to time. My twenty-something daughter called me last week to ask about a text message she had received from 'The Royal Mail'. It was telling her that she had a parcel waiting and that the sender had not paid the correct amount; therefore, if she wanted it to be delivered, she had to follow the link and pay the balance owing. She got as far as entering her personal info before questioning it and calling me. Thankfully she hadn't entered any bank details or payment information yet but I imagine many people do. As she had ordered something earlier in the week - online - as so many of us do, she immediately thought the text related to that. An easy mistake and I'd call her tech savvy but obviously illustrates that all ages get snared by these scammers!

I sometimes wonder if someone occasionally passes information from sellers or couriers to scammers. I have had a couple of scam emails after I have ordered something. After I identified a certain similarity in the messages I put some filters in place that deleted the emails before I even saw them.

I had an old one this morning! "I'm from Microsoft....." They didn't get any further! Some years ago I had one of those when I was working at Microsoft in Thames Valley Park. They told me I had a virus on my computer, I asked which floor they were on so I could bring it to them!
