i need help from the IT Tech Guys,
i have searched Google, but get frustrated by the layout and adverts that interrupt the search.
Can anyone advise me how your IP Address works.
Does your IP address get created in the location you purchase, set-up and operate your PC ?
If you Purchase and set up a PC in another Country is your IP Address based in that Country Continuously or does it move around the World with you ?
As an example if i purchased a PC from a Country in Europe, then brought the PC (Lap Top) to the UK, would the IP address alter ?
i am sure this is childs play for some of you l.o.l

No, your IP address isn't created in the location you purchase, set up, or operate your PC; it's assigned to your device by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) based on your connection to their network, not the physical location of your PC.

If you look at this site: https://whatismyipaddress.com/It can show a little map of where it thinks your IP address is.

Dean not wishing to confuse but since I set up a VPN (virtual private network) for added security it randomises your IP so it becomes more difficult for people to target you is how this seems to work. When I log on to VPN it shows me what other users will see my IP address as and it is never my static IP address. If I put in Jon's finder this is what it comes up with on VPN and I live in Devon so VPN doing it's thing.. ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2025/03/17/vp.png)

The ip address of your computer is set by your router to which you are connected to and the router has the ip address that is connected to the internet unless your computer has a sim card in that is directly connected to the internet.

Dean
what you highlight is correct re the IP address being used to target you when they bother to find that out. Not all of them do. There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Use a browser that is designed for your privacy not their benefit. Brave is based on Google's engine but they tweak it to protect you not abuse you, load and use this for the more important stuff. By choosing to use this product you will be "better" protected by not leaving trails of cookies and other rubbish. This is a bit like using the enhanced (incognito) private setting on other browsers like Chrome and Safari. (menu-file-open private window or similar)
2. If you are using a Mac/iPad etc there is a feature built into Apple that disguises your IP if you have an Apple subscription. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iphb01fc3c85/ios#:~:text=Hide%20IP%20address%3A%20Safari%20automatically,IP%20address%20isn't%20hidden.
3. There are a ton of VPN tools that you can use to make your connection appear to be coming from another location. They do generally provide a significant improvement. Many of the sites get around this by placing cookies which are then used to track you making the VPN less valuable than a better browser. They also cost money but can help. The Apple tool does this in the O/S and is generally better if you use an Apple product.
4. In most cases the adverts are driven more by cookies than your IP. Your browser will let you shred cookies or install a cookies blocking add-on (browser privacy extensions) search for adblock as an example of this.
5. The IP address is assigned by your ISP (Sky, NTL, BT etc) and is used to identify your home router. You router runs a matching table on the home side which is used to share this connection around the devices in your house. It is probably going to be something like 192.168.1.X. inside your house. The VPN makes your device hop through other "nodes" so it appears you come out in a different place. It only works on the machine you run it on not all the others in the house.
You are always going to get ads, it is just how personal they are?

This is what I get when using the free version of Opera browser. There is a subscription based VPN add-on but it doesn't seem to be needed in this case. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/NXRUVHh.jpg)

And now "smart" TVs are being subjected to cookies. All in the name of improving our user experience. What a load of cod's wallop they are trying to feed us. The reality is that it is all about making money.
As a browser I sometimes use Firefox Focus which does not save cookies or browsing history. In that case when I get the cookies pop-up I just accept all knowing that they will be deleted automatically.
Many people recommend DuckDuckGo as a more privacy oriented search engine. I have used it and I am not sure why I don't use it more often.
If you use any Google products where you log in (YouTube, Chrome, Google search, etc.) make sure you go to your account privacy settings and set them to match your requirements.
If you use any "social" apps on your mobile devices make sure that you have permissions to use the microphone turned off or set to have permission only whilst you are using the app or to "ask every time". Make sure that when you exit the app it is not still running in the background.
Avoid have "personal assistant" apps listening for wakeup phrases; "Hey Google", "Hey Siri", "Hey Alexa", etc. I do use some voice funtions but only activated on a button press: the most common use is "Timer xx minutes" for timing the pasta 😋
As far as the IP address is concerned our service provider dynamically assigns IP addresses when the router is started so every so often I restart the router.

Peter I tried Duck Duck go, didnt get on with it to well, it seemed to block my progression asking continuously if i wanted alternatives and such like.
If i have mobile Laptop, i assume if i am working with it in Europe from an internet provider, when i return to UK that provider changes IP address will change
Correct ?

You can set the DDG search engine as the default in Chrome. It is sometimes interesting when really different search results appear than with the google search. DuckDuckGo also offers a browser, it is very good and completely free of adverts. But I have realised that I am lazy and lack the comfort e.g. spontaneous translation of a whole website is not possible. That's why I'm back to Chrome.
