Thanks for all the links and tips. I was wondering how to do this and it doesn’t seem so bad after all. It might even be easier having those male fasteners in place.

As explained, I was missing the male studs so it sounds like you've got the opposite job to me Rog.


The Trimming Shop seems to offer all the punch and die sets for adding female press studs to fabric, perhaps apply a little Tipex on your male studs and while it's still wet press the mohair onto it to mark where to punch the fabric, the Tipex will be easy to remove later once dry.

Keep in mind mohair has the tendency to shrink over time, after it's seen some rain and gone through a few natural drying cycles you'll be surprised how much shrinkage you get with mohair, with this in mind I'd be inclined to make the first fit a bit baggy to allow for this inevitable shrinkage.

Let me know how adding the two extra zips goes?

Thanks Dave. Yes I have the opposite. My car came with a bright red tonneau. It was always a bit loud against the darker red leather so let it go. This black one without the fittings should work nicely on the black car.

Thanks for pointing out the mohair shrinkage. Hadn’t thought of that. I think I will drench/dry a few times before attempting the fit. Will let you know how the zip fitting goes…

Our shoulder belts don't have retractors but here's what I had done. I got the zippers and a friend who has a heavy duty commercial sewing machine did the work.

How would you get out when bursting for a wee? Am I just showing my age?

Seems a bit of overkill to me. Why not do it like I did, but with a zipper 2-3" longer? That would clear the belt retractor.

I got made an additional zipper, parallel to the center one and just as long. It is placed a little more medial than your red stripe, so you can still use the most lateral stud on the scuttle. In that way you can even drive with the vertical part of the tonneau fixed, for a little more protection. No problem putting it on and taking it off from inside the car, or you can just tuck it away, it will not foul the belt. Now the horizontal flap is rolled backwards and the roll fixed with two straps added to the tonneau behind the head rests, using press buttons, much like a "door" or window on a camping tent, or the sidescreen on a boat canvas top if you like. In that way the redundant cloth of the tonneau stays in a roll outside, rather than folded up inside. In this way the tonneau doesn´t even touch the belt.
