As far as I can see there isn't a reasonably practical, affordable, electric alternative with even 100 mile range for towing my 1,900 Kg caravan. Similar point to Keith above really. I have a Mazda CX60 for towing and pretty frequent 160 mile work related round trips which has a 3.3 litre inline 6 diesel which does this easily and reasonably economically (c30mpg towing, 55-60mpg on longish non towing trips. I would never have been prepared to do the 3 week tour of Scotland from the South coast we did last year with an electric tow car - I'd have had to stop 5 or 6 times each way - and imagine getting a car with a 25ft long van behind it onto a charging point 😩. From what I have heard from friends with petrol plug in hybrids, whilst they could be an alternative, many of them seem to have lots of technical glitches still. I hope there will be a very impressive leap in battery technology with sensible costing to enable those with caravans to realistically contemplate moving to electric. In the mean time, I'll hope my CX60 continues to perform reliably and that Mazda supports them for a decent time into the future..

What about HGV's how long before they are electric and capable of trans continental trips and what about HGV's from countries where they don't have a ban on diesel vehicles delivering to UK ???????

There's an electric truck out on test at moment on long haul runs with 40 foot trailer. Does about 600 km on a run. Doesn't seem much but as drivers hours are to be observed, it can be charged in the 45 min break and after the days journey.
Currently utilising the motorway charging stations - bit of pain at moment as needs to unhook trailer to gain access to the car charging points but if chargers are rolled out in the lorry parking areas....

Big issue again will be infrastructure - those EV charging stations take a huge amount of power, so you imagine trying to install enough HGV chargers...

The batteries must be in the trailer the tractor unit won't be big enough for all those batteries so won't be able to use a car charger.
