So much common sense spoken on here the last few days it is a very serious issue after all. I find it hard to believe given its position the rack would have been checked for tightness during a service. Will keep you informed of the outcome.

I wish I could offer more than my previous advice to write to the MD and explain the facts of what occurred and how MMC responded to the issue.

Previously, I had an excellent relationship with the key people within the business and I believe I know exactly how they would have responded to this, when provided with the facts. However, that relationship has ceased in recent years. In fact, quite recently, one department within the business reached out to me, I offered assistance on the particular area they wanted to discuss and I didn't even receive the courtesy of a reply. Let me reiterate that: they reached out to me (not me contacting them), I said I would be happy to assist (because I felt the content would benefit the wider Morgan community) and they didn't respond when I confirmed I would meet with them. That really tells me all I need to know. It is rare for me to (ever) 'blow my own trumpet' but the area they inquired about falls directly into an area that is a particular strength of mine. My belief was that it was win-win: good for MMC and good for the Morgan community. To not even respond gives me a perception of how they view the value of my time and this Morgan community.

Em, I'm sorry, if I could have interceded, I would have. The people I used to deal with at Morgan trusted me; in my experience, they knew that when I spoke to them about a specific situation, on behalf of someone within our community, it was for a good reason. This, to my mind, would have been one of those instances.

Em, can only add to what others have already commented.

I would definitely write/e-mail the MD and relate your tale and express your concerns.

I reckon they should be thanking you for pointing out a potential disaster waiting to happen - perhaps for other owners too?

At the very least they should be off-setting the workshop charges.

Good luck with getting a positive resolution.....

A bullet for your armoury…

Copied from Gov.uk “Vehicle recalls and faults”:

If you find a serious defect that affects the safety of your vehicle, one of its parts, or an accessory, report it to the manufacturer immediately.

Tell the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) if you’re not happy with how the manufacturer is dealing with your report.

DVSA will:

investigate the issue with the manufacturer
tell you what action is being taken
The vehicle, part or accessory can be recalled if it’s found to be a serious safety issue.

What counts as a serious safety defect

A serious safety defect is something:

about the way the vehicle is designed or made that’s likely to cause injury or death
that happens suddenly and without warning

Talkmorgan. Thanks very much for that I know over the years you have fought the corner of many people on here who have left the fold. I did not expect any intervention on your part I guessed your relationship had got a bit colder I know Talkmorgan has with MMC. Shortsightedness on their part given the various amount of owners on the forum. As mentioned earlier its only mow the gravity of the situation has really hit me this could happen to any cx car also very many have not reached the 13k milestone. Em

Personal view, I think the DVSA should be advised in any event. They won't be fobbed off.

Agreed even if it is a one in one thousand event it could lead to a serious accident.

When i have advised the factory in 2020 that my plus four didnt brake. The answer was: the braking is according
The CEE régulations. I had to use the car 8 months before the stop driving in june 2021. Then the brake cylinder was changed and even the braking is soft it is working.

Just to throw in my little bit; I think it is outrageous that you have been charged by the factory to put this right and even more so since you are a long term customer.
Think about this. If you had had a serious crash you would have been held responsible but most likely nobody would have ever thought that the cause was detached steering rack, and damage to the car might have precluded an investigation.
At the very least I think a letter to the CEO is in order but I think I would be getting legal advice. This is dangerous enough that there should be a re-call on all the cars fitted with this steering rack for a control and rectification.

Strangely enough I had a similar experience years ago with a Vauxhall Velox that belonged to my mother. The bolts holding the steering box in place came loose and fell out. Fortunately when it came completely adrift I was probably only doing 10 miles an hour having travelled only about 50 yards before the first left turn. It went off the road and I was just able to stop before going into a ditch. It was certainly a weird feeling not being able to steer the car. My mother was always somehow conviced it was my fault confused2
Five minutes later and I would have been on the open road at at least 50 mph so I guess I was lucky. I was able to tighten up the one remaing bolt and drive it cautiously the 10 miles to get it home.

Which is why I think it is necessary to involve the DVSA. By all means contact the CEO, but this could be symptomatic of poor design / build / QA at MMC which may impact other safety critical systems on the CX.
