Having been laid up myself for just over three weeks, but now feeling a little more mobile, I decided this morning to fire up my 4/4 only to find the battery was too flat to turnover the engine. There’s a socket fitted to allow easy charging so half an hour on charge provided enough amps to get the car started, but I wondered whether that much battery drain in less than a month is normal, or is my battery on the way out.

Grateful for any thoughts, please

Mark

Believe it or not the clock and flashing immobiliser light was enough to drain the battery!
Better since i swopped the starter for a hi torque one .

What's the voltage reading from the battery? Anything less than 12.6V and the battery probably needs replacing.

Unfortunately the standing voltage battery test only tells you the state of charge of the remaining capacity Tim, so could be the same on a new as well as a 10 year old battery if the latter had recently been used. Typically much reduced capacity is only realised after a layup or the first hint of winter temperatures and often masked by leaving battery on a conditioner/charger.

There should be a code or date stamp on the top of the battery, also knowing the brand is helpful as not all brands are equal quality

That’s all that should have been drawing down on my battery. When I can bend down to have a look at the battery I’ll probably take the opportunity to replace it.

You could also install a battery disconnect switch.

There are sound reasons why these were factory fitted, before the accountants got involved I suspect, I shall fit one to our Son's 4/4 Sport before he picks it up so he won't need a charger float at all.
