Standing in the garage smelling the hot alloy and oil as the car cools down after a brisk run out.
Marzipan
Cheese on toast
Petrol on the forecourt
Sea air

Book store (used book store in particular)
Freshly baked bread
Old jaguar interior
Post-thunderstorm
And this is a strange one -- tyre shop (my grandfather had one where I as a kid moving tyres around, so probably just nostalgic memories, but aren't they all?)

Anthracite burning in a narrowboat stove.
The smell of leather in my Morgan.
Castor oil burning in a vintage race engine.
Edam cheese browned on toast.
The whiff of fish and chips outside a chippy.
Outside a busy Indian restaurant.
The smell of freshly ground coffee.

The "British Car Smell" you get when you inhale deeply after shutting the door on your 65 MGB with the hood up. Original carpet, underfelt, well worn connelly leather and Castrol combine to make one of the most satisfying, relaxing smells known to mankind. Close your eyes and you almost go back in time.

Or the smell inside your Jaguar MK VII after you clean the headliner, as recommended in the owner's manual, with a "petrol soaked mutton cloth"

I have led a charmed life. My wife lost her sense of smell after our first child was born and has never regained it. She could not enjoy the smell of coffee roasting in a bean importer in Trieste . The smell of my firework display on her 60th birthday in the snowy mountains of Slovenia ( and no I did not know it was not allowed) ! The pointless perfume I rarely now buy her……or even my wonderful Aqua Di Silva Victor aftershave. The fragrance of flowers I buy her or the bouquet of a nice wine. Even everyday smells, like burning the toast !! Sad really as they can be so intoxicating of remind one of past shared experiences. MM PS Love all the ‘smells’ listed. In the various posts.
