Hi I have an 1800cc Black Top Zetec engine I thank its based in the Ford Focus Can any please give me an idea when the fuel pump earth would or is likely to be, The pump sender is working confirming the amount of fuel in the tank but again the pump its self does not work but connect an auxiliary power to the pump and the pump runs.
Richard, thanks for the relay info, though wonder if there might be any advantage to using a relay with a diode across the contacts to perhaps extend it`s lifespan...? Similar thinking might be applied to the starter motor relay...thinking the effects of back EMF from an inductive load..?

You raise an interesting issue with your post George. Clearly the relatively low current cube shaped starter relay, matching others on the car, should have diode protection for ECU and associated electronics. What of the piggy back starter solenoid though? This has two coils each much larger than the relay mentioned above with consequently greater back emf spikes but no diode protection. Video below explains the need for the two coils.
AI answer suggests that circuit design mitigates these spikes but how I wonder

Another reason I will never comment on Electronic/Electrical issues on here is that you are only subject to a novices interpretation of the fault condition, never a good thing. If you don't know anything seek a local expert and put some money their way instead of blowing something else up.
I won't touch building as I don't like or understand concrete and blocks as they bore the arse off me too. I have builder friends that do and employ them instead.

RichardV6, many thanks for posting the vid. As they say every day is a school day, in that I had no idea that the starter solenoid design had two windings, though at least I can can understand why. I have stripped and repaired a few starters, and their solenoids, even down to reversing a burned and pitted copper disc in the solenoid, to extend it`s servicability, and never gave it a thought that there might be two coils within the solenoid.... Duh..!
My question re the possible advantage of a diode across the contacts in the relay, was related to the possibility of the diode quenching the back emf from the solenoid coil, when the relay contacts broke the circuit, thus perhaps the addition of a diode would extend contact life...and were that the case, the relay failure rate might be reduced..?
Also thanks for posting the pic of the relay with the diode across the coil, which from your description is there to protect later Morgans than mine, on which numerous functions are controlled by an ECU..
