I thought maybe we could share experience as this price and availability thing evolves. We are due to do another Highland road trip at the end of April, but with an unpredictable future, I may adopt Plan B and take the diesel Golf. because I can get twice as far on a tank.

Anyway. over the past few weeks I've been to Derby to family, and there has been no sign of shortage or queues.

Last Saturday we travelled to St Mawes in Cornwall, and travelled early as we do. There was not a problem. Forecourts were empty. Prices were over £1.85 petrol, and at Michael Wood Services (BP) on the M5, V Power Diesel is £2.19.9. Empty forecourts.

While we were in Cornwall. our doom and gloom friends were texting the there was no fuel around where we live. Thinking this through, they are penny wise on fuel and use Asda.Sainsburys and Morrisons. Logically, the cheaper stations will always run out first.

Coming back this morning, we did a 4.22am start with a full tank. Stopped at Michael Wood Services. Empty forecourt. Then did a splash and dash at a Shell station just off the M1 at J29. By then it was about 8.30. Just a couple of cars filling up. So it was not a problem at all. Maybe the price is controlling panic buying.

Lets see how this develops over the next few weeks.

Our nearest 2 garages are £1.83 per litre of diesel. Petrol is around 30p lower I think. We bought (leased) an electric car two weeks ago, and sold the diesel!

We're off to Mull in the Landy in June, I'm budgeting that diesel will be £2 a litre by then, so £500 or so for the whole week. Never mind, it's a holiday. The Mini is still costing us only 2p/mile.

The fossil fuel fans have said for ages that renewables are useless when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine, now we know that ICE isn't so attractive when the Straits of Hormuz aren't working.

I'm sure prices will come back down once Iran and China do a deal and we start trading oil in Yuan.

Next gas station here: Diesel 2,37€ (£2,07)

£1.84 for diesel at my local Esso yesterday. Only one other car filling up. No idea on petrol price as I haven't got one now. I think prices will still rise until imports return to a more normal level. Local supermarkets are a couple of pennies cheaper and still appear to have supplies.

So many happy memories here over my lifetime , boating, speedboat, diving, Morgans, Cornish smocks, girlfriends, wife & kids etc etc.
Decided to stopathome this Easter and monitor the petrol situation pending a trip to the southwest late April, early May for my birthday.

I used to be responsible for running 400 + company owned petrol stations and a large dealer network. Petrol is in my blood and all directions if asked include “ pass the Shell station, turn left at the BP site” etc etc , so it was nice that you detailed a couple.
The next fuel shortage worries me, as so many forecourts have gone for housing and supermarkets are now the backbone of our distribution system.
We now have too few refineries, too little petrol and diesel storage - we are one of the worst in Europe and of the major economies.

Buckle up guys, we could be in for a tough ride…or no ride at all ….borrow an EV !?

PS I would live in St Mawes but my wife thinks we would be too far from the kids .

No issues on my last two fills (earlier this week). E5 was at £1.78 per litre, E10 was at £1.53. The current E10 price is probably around what I used to pay for E5, which was my "go to" fuel of choice. I may change to E10 for long journeys and pop the occasional tank of E5 in, particularly before any period of inactivity.

There doesn't seem to be a shortage....... (kiss of death), and no real signs of panic buying........(oh my god I'm tempting fate)...!!

We've been from the glorious home counties out to the far east (North Norfolk) and up to the frozen north, Huddersfield, in the last 2 weeks and not had a single issue.....🤦🏻‍♂️😱

I was always under the impression that the price of fuel was set many months in advance when it was traded by the oil traders/speculators.......

SO, how and why are prices rocketing up as they are.....??.................. Surely it's not......... profiteering....!!!!!!!!!😤

I am off to Scotland on Monday in the Plus Four. Topped up the tank yesterday with V-Power so £21 only needed.
Fuel stops planned on route as usual but will be trying to keep a decent amount in the tank at all times. Easier than living close to the edge. I normally use 250 miles for a full tank to refuel, leaving a liveable residual. This time I'll drop that 250 guide.
Locally here 95 octane is £1.52/l. V-Power yesterday £1.69/l at the Shell garage. I prefer the V-power and over the 19k+ miles so far it would have cost just under £200 more. Not a huge difference based on average cost/l prices over the 2+years. Some Supermarkets seem to have some shortages locally but others no problems.
Route up will be via mid Wales to pick up M6 at Warrington. I'll refuel at shorter stages at known petrol stations I've used before.
Scotland could be fun! Satnav to locate fuel stops but hopefully no scares. The unmanned cash/card pumps could be interesting.
Applecross has a community pump so if we go there it could be hit or miss?
