Exactly two decades after the smoke had finally cleared from the rugged, wind-swept landscapes of the Falklands War, a family stood united in solemn remembrance at Buckingham Palace. The elegant woman is Sara Jones, the resilient widow of Lieutenant Colonel H. Jones, standing alongside their son, Rupert. They were gathered to celebrate Rupert receiving his MBE—a beautiful milestone that fell poignantly on the anniversary of the conflict. The story behind their quiet strength takes us back to the legendary Battle of Goose Green in May 1982, where Lieutenant Colonel H. Jones cemented his name into military history. When his beloved paratroopers became desperately pinned down under a devastating web of enemy machine-gun fire, he refused to let his men perish in the dirt. With absolute defiance, he single-handedly charged up a heavily fortified hill, drawing the lethal fire onto himself so his battalion could survive and triumph. He fell on that battlefield, but his heroic sacrifice earned him the Victoria Cross—the nation's highest recognition for bravery. In this photo, twenty years later, his son Rupert stands tall, wearing the exact same steadfast gaze. Rupert would go on to honor his father's memory in the most powerful way imaginable, rising through the ranks of the British Army to eventually become a Major General. 🏅✨🦅

On the Kingswear slip of the Lower Ferry H has a plaque in honour of his ultimate sacrifice.



P.S. His brother is a lovely chap and commercial Organic Egg Farmer there whom I used to visit whilst working for Animal Health post retirement of the day job.
