Chaps, I have noticed recently a bit more ' chatter' from the engine than I have noticed in the past. The engine is functioning well and there are no concerns, however the 'chatter' is noticeable under load at @ 3,500 revs.
It is certainly emanating from the top of the engine - very much like tappet rattle.
In normal running( not loaded) the engine performs well and makes a great sound, perhaps it is just a characteristic of the Ford Duratec engine.
Has anyone else hd similar experience?
All the best
Tony

Sounds like pinking (knock) rather than anything mechanical to me...

Usually caused by lower quality fuel but most modern engines have knock sensors which adjust ignition and fuelling to account for it. However you can still get some transient "knock" under load.

Have you had a change of filling station recently, with a possibly poorer fuel...or have you left the fuel in the tank for a long time (like over winter). Modern fuel ages and reduced in octane value if not used...

Thanks Phil, I try to only use shell, bought from my local garage - not supermarket, but it could be that they are selling poorer quality fuel. I will change brand to Mobil and see if here is a differnce.
All the best

Tony

Quick "cure" would be to sling some "super" in and see if the problem goes away after a few miles.

Personally, I've never had a problem with Shell petrol and as the turnover must be huge at my local outlet, don't expect to either.

Thanks

You need to try some super unleaded, I don't think Red X will do much good for the octane rating.

Red-ex is nearly snake oil.

I suspect it will lower the octane rating of fuel since as far as I know, it is basically a thin oil, albeit loaded with detergents.
