Identical except for an additional small spade lug connector on opposite side which connects with the ballast resistor next to the coil. I suspect this one is for a non ballast ignition system and mine is with ballast. I'm now fairly certain the part no. is 76795 or 76789 would also do. So much help from everyone.......what would I do without TM! Neil.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. Got the part this arvo from a local auto electrical place and fitted it. All is working well.............at the moment! However, I've popped the mutimeter into the car for now and if it should happen again I can do a bit of sleuthing! as it could just still be the starter at fault. Happy to one and all. Neil.

Before you replace the solenoid I would check with a multimeter that it is being powered.

Before you replace the solenoid I would check with a multimeter that it is being powered. Yes John, everything checked out OK.....no unusual voltage drops, no unexpected increased reistances, all connections checked and cleaned and power going to solenoid. The RACV guy did it all originally but it didn't hurt to check!! As I mentioned in a previous post, the multimeter will accompany me for a while! Neil.

I had a problem like this on my 76 4/4. There was a connector under the dash near the washer which ad over time got wet and therefore corroded. The problem was exactly like yours and attending to this connector solved it. Maybe??????????
