My 1958 plus 4 moss box oil leak has got to a point where it is time to pull the gearbox to replace seals etc. Could someone please let me know the best way to remove the gearbox from the car.

@ Mark, it's very easy, remove the seats, steeringwheel, carpets and the gearbox & propshaft cover. Put a thick piece of wood under the magnesium belhousing. Remove the 4 propshaftbolts, handbrakecable and 6 gearboxbolts. Put your jack under the gearbox, and work it loose. My box was leaking at the front, it needed just a new oilseal. If your box is leaking at the back, look at Gomog.com Good luck.

Don't forget the paper gasket on the front when you put it back, otherwise you may get a leak from the front of the layshaft.

Resurrecting an older thread, any tips on how to get the input shaft muff-coupling unhooked?
Just re-installed my engine-transmission to find the gearbox is spewing like an angry camel after a dentist visit.

Good point, and obviously don't disengage the clutch when the transmission is disconnected. Now... about that darn muff coupling

Got the coupling off with a lot of heat, prying, and tapping the input shaft with a rubber mallet. Darn thing was rusted on there pretty well.
Now comes the fun task of stabbing the gearbox back in with the engine already in place.

Hi Ive just taken our plus 4 1958 gearbox out and wondered if anyone had advice on curing the following symptoms Engine running in neutral gearbox noise Clutch in then no noise Car running in gear and if engine put under strain a noise like frying onions either going up hill or accelerating any idea what this may be ? Front shaft bearings with the 'bearing outrigger had steel swarf from somewhere didn't appear to be in the main gearbox (bearing outrigger is aluminium bearings feel ok) see flicker photos see photos here

Inside the bellhousing is a small 'prop-like' shaft; called the quill shaft. this is connected to the front of the gearbox (over the toothed splined shaft shown is photo) and the front of the quilt shaft is a 1 inch or so diameter 'rod' that does through the clutch and teeth connect it to the clutch.
This quill shaft is often 'stuck' to gearbox and comes out with box; good if it does. You must be careful not to allow weight of gearbox to drop down with quill shaft still engaged at both ends - it can quite easily bend the clutch bar-end
