I have recently replaced the bushings in the gear lever mechanism of my 1993 Plus 8. Having put everything back together I have noticed that the reversing lights are not working properly. When I move the gear lever into reverse, the lights come on, however when I let go of the lever they switch off. I hope that this is an easy fix and I don’t need to take the seats out/drive shaft and gear box cover etc. in order to fix this.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the guidance. I was able to tighten the switch and firmly set the lock nut. The reversing lights work perfectly again.
Very happy that I didn’t have to remove the seats, tunnel, gear box cover to resolve this.

Thanks for all the constructive advice.

Until next time …!

GoMog suggest 180° clockwise, before tightening locknut and re-attaching switch leads.

Actually, gomog (aka me most often but not here) states that one should "Select reverse, release the locknut and rotate the switch until the light JUST comes on; then rotate the switch 180° in a clockwise (this may be counter-clockwise) direction and tighten the locknut. Can you check that for me and the Manual? Could be a typo.

Richard, I see your gearbox cover did not have the reverse switch access. The accesses vary whimsically from cover to cover. None neatly gives one access to everything that is going to need replacement, which is why the gang and I recently offered suggestions for Sd1 remote gearbox cover tweaks. https://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/GearCoverTweak.html

Bullet connectors are an often used British connector, now found all over the world. I am not a fan of British Lucars versus American ones, but I DO like bullet connectors. But no connector is trustworthy unless soldered or fit with a professional crimper, which is well-worth the minimal cost. Our cars are riddled with such connectors, but sadly they are often covered with "undersealing" obscuring both the all-important wire colors and the connectors themselves. In any event, see below

It looks like the previous owner thankfully cut an access point into the top of the gearbox housing to make it easier to access the switch. Image link below.
I assume the switch needs to be tightened to improve the connection, then lock in place with the locking nut. think I made the mistake of trying to do this while the car was in reverse gear with the ignition on (so that I can see when the reversing light is on). I ended up blowing the 5A fuse!
I will try again tomorrow. Since the bolt has the wires attached to the connectors, there is only a limited amount of turning I can do on the bolt without twisting the wires and putting stress on the connectors. Let me know if there is a better way to do this 😊.

Thanks.
