I'm trying to upload an avatar photo to my profile, but not having any success. I have reduced the size to less than 100X100 pixels and uploaded it to the Talk Morgan Image site but, when I put the URL into the profile page, I get and "Improper Image Type" message. Am I missing something?

This "feature" was introduced with version 4.0.4 which I installed about a year ago. Unfortunately it was intentional on the part of the developer in order to "standardise" the JPEG file type extension. Since a) the jpg extension is the more common type, and b) in order to support files uploaded before the version 4.0.4 (we are now at V 4.0.10) both .jpg and .jpeg files are supported I can not understand the need to convert the file extensions.

Unfortunately the code is very complex and I have had no success in finding the section where the file name extensions are changed.

I have registered some feedback to the developer.

Just to give a further update on this question for those who have an interst in technical issues.

I have now located the section of the code which converts the file extension from .jpg to .jpeg. I have also understood the method used.

The background of this is that original versions of windows required a 3 letter extension whereas other operating systems could use a 4 letter file extension. All operating systems now have the capability of using a 4 letter extension however the 3 letter .jpg extension remains the most commonly used.

For the moment I have returned to the original convention. That means that the rare files that are uploaded with a .jpeg extension will be converted to .jpg

Unfortunately the code is quite complex and I have not been able to make it function so that the original file extension, be it .jpg or .jpeg, is retained, the way the code works it must be one or the other.

For the moment any files uploaded with either .jpg or .jpeg extensions will have the .jpg extension which will allow them to be used as an avatar (unless the file size is small I would recommend using the thumbnail).

For the moment this means that a small change will need to be made in the code every time there is an update. I hope that in the future the developer makes a change which allows both extensions to be retained. The question also remains that perhaps UBB.threads (the software used by this forum) should update their code to support both extensions too.

Simply host the full size image to your external site of choice as you would if posting an image. Then copy the image link ending in .jpg, .gif. or .png (as per example) and paste into avatar link box within "Edit Profile", ignoring the 100 x 100 size limit, and save. You then have an avatar sharp enough to allow zooming in.

I have

downloaded it
saved it to gif (it was a jpeg which is what caused it to bork)
uploaded it again to the tm-img site

If you can go into your profile and get to the avatar image settings.
select the second option and put in this code https://www.tm-img.com/images/2023/12/17/IMG_6028.gif
go to the bottom of the page and hit save!

It has worked for my avatar as a test, hopefully you can see this?

I will flip mine back shortly so we don't get confused...... santahohoho

That image is 1465 x 1080 unfortunately, so will need to be downsized to be used as an avatar (the max is 100 x 100). You can do this using a free ap like Image Size, which is free.

Richard: Well I did say I might confuse matters! I hadn't checked how the avatar setting worked, I thought it just stored the url. You are correct, the forum software checks the picture and therefore suffers the same .jpg / .jpeg bug of the galleries. All the while TM-img changes jpeg file extensions it can't be used to host avatars in that case.

Alistair: Yes I do onion gravy too!
