I saw this on a 2020 car. The steering rack gators were made from quite hard plastic rather than the usual rubbery stuff so were reluctant to flex. I believe the gaiters were subsequently changed under warranty. Another own goal by MMC I'm afraid.

The bean counters probably saved 10p per side fitting the inferior gaiters.

If you need a new steering gaiter quickly they are the same as a Mk1 or Mk2 Ford Escort.

But is that white bit even in the right place? Looks like a seal came off the rack and tore the boot. If it's only the boot at least it isn't as bad as it looks at first glance.
@planetnut Thanks. Should be fixed under warranty along with some other stuff. I've been after the dealer for a month. So far they can't be bothered to set it up. Shouldn't be this hard, but we'll see what happens.

The white plastic bit looks like the spacer that restricts the rack travel and is in the right place. On the other hand, the gaiter is piss poor...

Some of us four wheeler owners have been suffering split / leaking steering rack gaiters on late production cars, especially Roadsters These folk https://www.carbuilder.com/uk do a universal stepped rack gaiter that are made of a more flexible rubber

Thanks, Calum. If it's only boot, that's one less thing, at least. Boot isn't as big a deal. I could probably split open and clamp a universal boot to cover the mess until I can get it sorted. At least I'll be able to move it without hurting anything.

Post 2018 cars have this issue - the gaiters go hard due to the heat and then tear. White spacer is correct as Callum states.
