Epic Euro excursion

The Italian šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ trip has begun. The drive to Newcastle to catch the overnight ferry was quite pleasant. The DFDS service is absolutely superb, what a pleasure, all immaculate and a comfortable cabin. the buffet meal and breakfast had endless choice and dozens of attentive staff.
It’s been a long drive from Amsterdam to our next stop here in Munich, top speed on the autobahn was 170mph but petrol disappears fast at that speed and I paid a whopping 2.54euro per litre for the premium stuff on the motorway so probably not worth the time saving.

Some likeminded travellers at the Newcastle terminal

Ewan, you need one of these (displayed at a recent model aero-engine "collecto" in Germany)

The Ferrari seems to keep itself reasonably clean anyway but part of the reason we hired the house was so that we could wash it. People here are shocked that we would drive all the way but I doubt it would be any cheaper to do it in a motor home, these can cost just as much to buy and the driving could be tedious. The house has been a godsend, it’s so much more an authentic experience than an hotel. The local pharmacist, one of many who seem to be amazed by the sight of a Ferrari, tells me Mattia Binnoto lives close by. He was off to Imola for an event marking the 30th anniversary of Senna’s death.

Watching our thread is no excuse for not doing the trip yourselves, ā€œget while the gettin’s goodā€, if you still have your health and the means, do it!

I wasn't there, and the pics have only just appeared online at https://www.speedmodelcar.org/2024/02/07/first-international-model-engine-swap-meet/

Yesterday was scorhio weather but we had thunderstorms last night, the first part of our journey north was dry enough, then it turned Scottishy😁

We’ve arrived at Stresa, not lake Como, shows how much attention I pay, my son organised everything, I just go where I’m toldšŸ˜‚ We avoided the autostrada and took a rural route, it’s mostly flat and the towns have large manufacturing plants around them, it amazing how many products must be manufactured in this region. They love roundabouts and speed cameras, I’ve a feeling I’ll have some fines waiting for me when I get home.

And you should see/hear them running love

The one in the video was made by Rolf Luther, who "learned his craft" from the maestro Hubert Schillings, who I met at his home/workshop in Germany c.1978. I bought a few engines from him (single, flat twin, V-twin), I just have the single-cylinder left.

Anyone who (a) reads German and (b) has astonishing model-engineering skills, should buy his book https://www.buecher.de/artikel/ebook/mtb-boxer--reihen-und-v-motoren-als-modell-ebook-epub/63316059/

Stresa is a fantastic town to stop off in, it's where we based ourselves for a week when we did our Italian trip. Do the trip out to the islands if you have time, the gardens are stunning.
Keep the pictures coming and enjoy the rest of your trip.

It’s stunning scenery around here ( it would be even better if those clouds would clear off back to Britain where they belong).
Walked the promenade to work up an appetite, the meal was delicious but I’ve no idea what I ordered, they don’t do burgers and pizza here šŸ˜‚
It translates as purple potatoes but I don’t taste potato?
Spotted two proper classics here, I had this and the previous model Espace, blew them both up, still liked them. Ace family car, you could drive like an idiot and folk just forgave you out of pity, needs hand prints and saliva on all the windows for that to work properly though.
