To me the poppy represents exactly what Martyn said, "sympathy for the fallen" and with respect to the British troops, a great appreciation for their ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.

Sympathy for the fallen of both sides is nothing to do with one's politics, but as articulated here just an appreciation for the sacrifice made on our behalf. This is what the Poppy represents to me, nothing more, nothing less.
