In my small 'Commune' regardless of politics or nationality, we are united in honouring the sacrifice of those who died doing their duty. Whether you agree with the politics at the time you are asked to serve your country or not. My family has fought for both Germany in WW1 and Britain in WW11 - My Grandfather had no choice in WW1, but was at the Head of the Line in WW11, BECAUSE he believed it to be a Just Cause. My fathers 'Medaille de la France Liberee' is above me as I write this.

I also live in a small commune and actually I am not sure of their views.
There is a sizable memorial to the resistance just along from the village and Oradour-sur-Glane is not far away. I think I can guess what their views are.
I appreciate for you having members of your family on both sides this is an extremely raw subject. WWII touched most families including mine my father was RN north Atlantic convoys..... I wont go into medals cause that would be just point scoring.
