Finally I found the time to start fitting my Suplex kit but found - as I suspected - that I need new kingpins (and bushings). I used a jack to lower the hub, kingpin and rebound spring after detaching the upper retaining bolt from the kingpin and the two bolts holding the plate at the bottom - as recommended in the included instructions. Very little effort and with very little risk of damage to me or the car. A rather big piece of cloth around the spring was my simple and effective insurance.
