I'm treading on thin ice here so... Perhaps the metaphor is too simple. The H-D unit is brute force in that it just always cranks out the power and dumps the excess to ground. The C-E unit tries to adjust and that may be where the failures happen. The controlling circuitry is not up to par in dealing with the variables that can happen with something as simple as a motor that goes from zero rpm's to 5K rpm.
Okay, I still can't seem to make what you say fit with what the bikers says in those threads. It just doesn't fit together in my feeble mind.

Hehe, yeah, having to swap the thin constantly as some in this thread, I'd say that too.
Yes, I would very much appreciate some explanation I understand and makes me put the puzzle somewhat together.
Martyn's explanation helps a bit, but I have to reread it a couple of times I guess. Having rectifiers, or more having to understand rectifiers is rather new to me, although I do get the need for those things.
