Problem sorted, thanks for all your tips!
I looked at Richard's idea of the locking hose connector but unfortunately it doesn't have one. Not to be deterred however I engaged the help of my better half. Carefully ensuring that the connector was at the same angle as the nipple as per Jay's suggestion I had her hold the connector in place while I operated the gun. Heaven knows what the neighbours were thinking as I instructed her to "hold it tight on the nipples, I'll pump hard and hopefully it won't ooze out this time".
Anyway it did ooze out but this time only underneath the car where it's supposed to.
