I have definitely noticed the clipped sound of MP3s but as I age I find my hearing is degrading and wonder if revisiting the world of audiophile hardware really makes sense?? I still have some 1000 vinyl LPs.

Yes! with that amount of spinning discs you should. True listening is not only about the ability to receive the highest frequencies. The "music" (technically spoken as well) is most important in the mid frequency band, and this band we can hear until our last day. Any digital gear, until this day, is not able to reproduce e.g. congas as a vinyl can do. Never can deliver the same attack and physical experience as played by vinyl.
