I fully understand the watch weakness. I have bought quite a few which I love to bits. My latest is being made for me as I write, it should be with me in a few months and will be the only one in the world like it.
As for pens, well I used to always write to people using a vintage Parker and even used sealing wax, with the appropriate personal seal, to fix the envelops but nobody wants to respond to that anymore so it's down to one finger typing here.
