if I remember correctly, confusion in the air is not restricted to Europe.

A pilot friend reported that in the USA the air traffic control has abandoned the nautical mile (good) and introduced the terrestrial mile banghead as unit for distances and as basis for speed.

Consequently, someone reported the airplane speed in "mph" to ground control. In return they asked something like:
"... and what is that in knots?"

His response:
"What do I know, I´m flying, not sailing!"
