Mine has the IR unit plugged into the back and a little square receiver attached next to the radio at the front. Certainly if I was replacing it I would get a version with the IR receiver built in.

Given that we are all supposed to be moving to DAB I would not buy anything other than a DAB system. The UK is supposed to be switching off FM broadcast in the next 4 years.
