I'm ready to be corrected, but I think the top grease nipple is on cars which have a thrust bearing under the top main spring. Unless your car has been modified it will still have the damper blades to fulfil the same function. The damper blades are the thin spring steel blades running between the stub axle to the chassis side rail. I wouldn't be too concerned that grease showed at the top of one and bottom of the other- it has obviously got into the bearing itself. Any great excess in that area is in danger of contaminating the front disc brakes.
Well done for tackling this basic maintenance job, some new owners find it quite daunting.
