Certainly remember Parade – and the twin publications Spick and Span, and Reveille. Interesting to see the cover of Titbits. When I was 6-ish I could never understand why my 70-something great-grandfather subscribed to the last two. But I think I know now…

Currently reading The Cultural Revolution : A People’s History 1962-1976 by Frank Dikötter, although keeping track of all the Chinese names and their positions is challenging. Interesting (for me at least) was the fact that after the main thrust of the Cultural Revolution, in 1967 the following civil war spilled over into Hong Kong. In October 1966 I came to London for the first time for two job interviews; one in publishing and one with Crown Agents with a view to joining the Hong Kong police. Thank God I chose the former.

I don’t read much fiction but, with a long flight to Aus/NZ the week after next, I have just loaded the first two volumes of G F Newman’s The Corrupted on to my Kindle (currently 10 episodes making up Radio 4’s Afternoon Play – gripping!).

And should I finish those, I have Ken Clarke’s political memoirs.
