George Macdonald Fraser is one of my favorite writers too; not just his fiction mind you. Steel Bonnets over the border (about the border reivers) is excellent, Quartered safe out here (about his experiences in Burma) is one of the finest squaddy’s eye views of a military campaign I’ve ever read. His three books of comic short stories about Dand McNeill, based loosely on his time as a young officer in a highland regiment (the general danced at dawn, McAuslan in the rough, the sheikh and the dustbin) are absolute classics, which I’ve re-read many times.
