ELBOW GREASE, ELBOW GREASE, ELBOW GREASE!!
You can use a light/medium grade wire wool with the polish to give it a little extra 'bite'. I use that method a lot for exhaust tips. 9/10 it'll leave some light scratches though, which can then be polished out with a less abrasive metal polish.
