In the worst cases they get ritalin. Imagine Mozart today, he would be treated with ritalin and we had no Requiem and no Magic Flute because he would have been calmed down.

You have to let the free thinkers have some space otherwise all is lost. Our son went to a Grammar School and the dress code was smart and hair the same. He decided to go to the barbers one lunchtime and presented himself in class with a Mohican. He was instructed to change this style for something a little less startling so he got a Grade 2 allover and dyed it bright blue. There was nothing the school could do as the girls had dyed hair as well, so he changed colours weekly just to -iss them off. He kept it up for three years until he got bored with it.

He had a scooter which he worked and paid for in the school holidays and he would just vanish off the face of the planet for anything up to 3 days exploring the area with school friends. As you might imagine it caused us parents a lot of concern but we are both very positive people with a strong faith and hoped all would be well. This was time and space that he needed to develop in and we realised that at the time but it took a bit of living with.

He went on and got his 4 A levels at A and B grades without one nights homework, some people are wired differently. His two sisters worked incredibly hard for their 4 A levels and hated him at the time.

He has turned into a lovely caring human being that I am proud to call my friend and son.
