It's possibly the best lesson they will learn all year. How to challenge authority when it is wrong - by which I mean inflexible, unfair and disproportionate. If everyone took this view, we may get a better society.
As an aside, my 18 YO schooleaver son went to work for the first time today, on a building site. I hope it lives up to his expectations and I did warn him. "Dad, it can't be any worse than school" was his response.

He did have the time of his life and said the 9 hours flew by. Currently fashioning a car seat cover out of bin liners. Talking of which - and also more on topic - I once wore a bin liner to a school art exhibition for a bet.
Shame about the seats. Still the liners will fix it.
I was thinking of the soak in the bath to soothe the aching newly discovered muscle groups

He came to the gym with me after I picked him up, so muscles not too tired. In fact, he outlifted me on our final shoulder press set which was a first for him and prompted a bit of banter over whether I was wearing girls' knickers.
I can't remember much about the art exhibition except that the teachers didn't throw me out (which was what I wanted) so I had to attend the whole thing and got a bright pink heat rash over my torso. Also met a girl (it was a joint show with the local girls' Grammar School) who invited me back to her huge house with a pool. She and her family became and remained close friends - but my wife put her foot down at an 'ex' coming to our wedding. Still makes me annoyed that I had to lose a friend to gain a wife.
