Helmets can stop a lot of facial trauma from things like big bug, oranges and lemons thrown by children, rocks from multiple sources, car parts falling off of, vehicles (like wheels) and then the possible rollover. I have had all those things hit me while riding bikes or top down vehicles. Find a good helmet with good visibility and use it. We had an 18wheeler tire and wheel bounce over our Sprite at 70 mph that was thrown off a rig headed the opposite direction; we were very lucky it bounded over us rather than plowing into the windscreen.
Helmets are a good thing, not necessarily comfortable but cheap insurance for small incidents.
