By moving the bottom mounts to the furthest point, and reversing the top mount, managed to get the 10" fan in with about 5mm clearance on the bottom crossmember.

Decided to go with the 'pull through' clips, and will see how I get on with them.

The fan is a Revotec 10" Sucker/Puller Code FAN0220.. Also used one of their thermostatic switches.
