If the driver had engaged his adaptive cruise control (from a stalk) he would have been able to peruse his display all day long in complete safety - as I did in my Model S many times over many miles in all conditions.

Are you seriously suggesting that having a mechanical switch (stalk) which engages an extremely complex computerised system which in turn allows the person in charge of the vehicle to shift his/her attention from the road to a series of sub menus on a screen, is better than a mechanical switch that directly controls whatever is in the sub menu, is better? An advance? Bearing in mind that everything has to be done in this sub menu way, every action?
