In short, no. disconnect the battery and allow a few minutes for the ECU to discharge then disconnect the cable plug from the ECU. You can now unbolt the ECU and remove from the vehicle, what you do not want to have is static electricity present when opening the unit making sure the area you are working in is clean. Be careful when fitting the chip to make sure all the pins are located correctly and the chip is the right way round before pushing into place. To gain the best results you should also fit a rising rate fuel pressure regulator.
