Regarding need for good lighting on motorways or other dual carriageways, I find a good pool of light on dipped beam very necessary. This to maintain a reasonable and safe nightime speed, as with anything other than the quietest traffic conditions there is little or no opportunity to use main beam. The argument that bright lights dazzle is lost if the dip cutoff is of correct pattern and adjusted properly. My observations are that LED headlamps with dedicated optics have a far more accurate and severe cut-off than their halogen or earlier equivalents.
