I'm not familiar with the VW touchscreen. But I had the touchscreen in my 2009 Jag XJ and now in my 2016 Jag F-Pace. Both cars had/have the basic knobs / buttons for basic operations. So the touchscreen doesn't distract you at all (at least not me).

And I prefer a thousand times a touchscreen (that works, of course, not one with apparent problems as the one you say in the new VW Golf VIII) to the pealeolithic's rotary commands that used to equip (and still does) many models. Everytime I rent a nice BMW, Mercedes, Audi... and I have to enter an address in the navigation system, I remember how easy it is to do so with my Jag touchscreen with deployable virtual keyboard, while I rotate this silly rotary command to select the letters...

Touchscreen? Yes IMHO, but I totally agrre with the basic knobs and buttons available to avoid distractions during driving.
