So did I, but if we are on the EV thing then the costs & hidden pollution form the batteries is also a factor. Hydrogen would be the best as you are not lugging a ton or so of batteries about.
Absolutely true, but then we would need to include the environmental costs of prospecting, drilling, extraction, transport, refining, and distribution of petroleum into the equation. When you do that, the issue swings very clearly towards EVs as the oil extraction industry is so damaging.
I believe the ultimate solution will involve a mix of many technology and ownership types. For many users, especially those with local solar generation capabilities, BEVs make a great deal of sense as they can be charged cheaply and range is not an issue. For those who need to regularly travel long distances, hydrogen may well prove to be a good solution - as i suspect it will for heavy goods transport. For some, who only rarely need a long-distance car and don't have the time to stop for recharging en route, then a car-sharing scheme in which they can book a long-range vehicle for a specific date could also be a good idea. I don't think there's any need to focus on a 'one size fits all' solution.
