Indeed ... the GTE (presumably 'Grand Touring Estate') ... did just what it said on the tin ... we moved house in ours (70 mph down the M62 with a large cheese-plant flapping out of the rear tailgate ... the plant even survived the ordeal🙂) .... and,although it didn't have the pedigree name, it was indeed a Grand Tourer ... roomy and comfortable and loped away the miles behind the lazy V6 in overdrive top.
Sadly, as they fell down the food chain they tended to get tatty and poorly maintained which resulted in them hitting rock-bottom prices which tarnished the reputation of what was in fact a really good car.
There's a few GTEs and Coupes that race on the hillclimbs still .... they do well and, being properly looked after, are a credit to the marque
