I think you both have very valid points. Seems very strange that the cars entering Australia are having this problem. I am not sure if this is happening to the Uk cars, but I suspect that someone would have shouted by now, if that was the case.
Perhaps an email to MMC, pointing out the apparent problem and asking them to check how the cars are shipped. It might be that the shipping company are not aware of the damage they could be causing.
