I think they are thinking more along the lines of using defunct and new oil and gas fields, old coal mines etc. for carbon storage , although there is research going on with regards to thermal exchange for local heating from old deep coal mine water. The USA already has a trail underway with a carbon scrubber which is cleaning the air. Any way to recycle or capture carbon must add some value in the for the greater good.......whether reburning to release it again, balances out I'm not so sure
