Learned a lot from the above posts - many thanks to all!

So I got my car up on the lift and degreased the (agreed terribly engineered) linkage. Most of the "flopping forward" of the clutch pedal is due to slop in the linkage - specifically all of the clevis pin holes have been worn oval after 50+ years (understandable I guess...but really this is an incredibly cheap and unimpressive linkage!).

So I ordered a new linkage from Linda at Morgan Spares...should fix the problem. I *may* add a return spring as well, as I like the idea of being able to lightly rest my foot on the clutch pedal without wearing the bearing.
