Recordding exhaust notes is somewhat of an art.
In a previous life I worked as a programmer and part time music studio engineer for a company making computer games. We were making a racing game, and required 'rally' car engine noise.
I found that capturing this sound on a rolling road, required the mic to be muffled, and in the car footwell for the best sound and no distortion.
Having said that a good microphone is a serious assett in these situations as it will handle dynamics far better than a built in camera mic.
IDeally I could bring a recorder to a meet (when we manage to arrange one we can all get to!) and then we can get side by side comparisons to post on here so others can get an idea before they take the plunge..
Good idea seconded.. we should know what we are purchasing... and it's actual effects.
The Cerbera community went through exactly the same process a couple of years back... because there were several independent vendors in the market making different claims..
In the end it took a bench test Rolling Road shootout to get real results that the community could feel confident about what was happening.
In the end it came down to: Track Car Solutions in the North and Austec Racing in the south. Most of the other kit providers polarised around these two garages and the community is better for it.
Currently we have probably have 3 different OEM exhaust set-ups. and now 4 aftermarket ones?
We have ECU mapping from at least 2 different sources.
I've heard of but cannot get any actual results from Off the Peg Exhaust headers or race cats
And the Induction system is not advetised as a "to-fit" price and not very many people know what that actually is.
Same with the quick shift... there are several options but none of them are documented and rated for direct comparison.
The list goes on.
I'm currently putting togeather the project plan and costings for the "Boss Aero" Project and what i'm finding is that it could fit nicely into a number of stage'd kits that could be produced for certain areas of the car that in theory should be - Price to fit. not Part + fitting + VAT.
I have almost got a complete list of suppliers togeather and parts cost.. and when the project goes ahead should be able to form the basis for "to-fit" prices.
For now.. we should try to document what we already have... I konw there is the "tech-fix" thread... maybe there should be a upgrade kit comparison section which documents with photo's and sound files (where appropriate) the different options.
